Safety Considerations for Baby Cots
When setting up the baby cot:
- V or U shaped pillows should not be used for babies two years and younger. It is even better not to use pillows in baby cots at all for children so young.
- Baby cots should always be positioned away from windows, power points, heaters, as well as curtain and blind cords. Cords are a strangulation hazard.
- Small objects should never be placed in the baby cot. It could cause your baby to choke. Also remember to keep the baby cot uncluttered at all times. If it is not, a baby could climb on a pile of soft toys and fall over the rail of the baby cot.
- Hot water bottles or electric blankets should never be used for babies when present in baby cots.

It should be noted that the maximum spacing between panels and bars of the baby cot should not exceed 95mm if it is made from flexible material.
- The baby cot should not contain any small openings or holes between 5mm and 12mm. The small fingers of babies can become trapped.
- The baby cot should not contain any spaces between 30mm and 50mm. The arms and legs of babies can become trapped.
- The baby cot should have a minimum depth of 600mm from the base of the mattress to the top of the baby cot.
- The gap between the sides of the baby cot and its mattress should be less than 25mm.
