Dealing with Work and Pregnancy

Working while pregnant will leave most pregnant women with some interesting challenges, which include dealing with morning sickness, dealing with fatigue, keeping comfortable, and keeping stress under control. You should consider how you will go about managing all of the mentioned issues and subsequently ensure that the everyday duties of your work do not affect you as pregnant mother and your baby negatively.

Do’s and Don’ts regarding Work and Pregnancy

- Dealing with Morning Sickness

  • Get enough sleep. You may feel nauseated if you are tired all the time. Ensure that you go to bed early and that you get a solid night sleep.
  • Take it slow in the morning. Rushing around can contribute to nausea, so allow yourself extra time to get ready for work.
  • Drink enough fluids. Keep the nausea away by taking in enough liquid. Ginger ale is good to combat nausea.
  • Snack often. Snack more often by eating smaller meals. Lemon drops, dry crackers and hard candy is a good choice.
  • Avoid triggers. If the smell of coffee makes you sick, then stay away from coffee shops and out of the kitchen. The same goes for food which makes you feel queasy. Nothing is worse than having to go to work when feeling like you are going to vomit every few seconds.

- Dealing with Fatigue

  • Keep up your exercise routine. Exercise will help boost your energy levels even though it may be the last thing on your mind. This is especially good if you sit in front of a desk all day long.
  • Avoid outdoor activities. In order to get more rest when your working day is over, you should try and avoid outdoor activities. This includes shopping and cleaning the house.
  • Reschedule your work. If you feel tired and energy sapped when you have to work, reschedule to another time period when you feel better.
  • Take short, frequent breaks. Take little breaks from your work at regular intervals. Use that time to do something different from your actual work.

- Keeping Comfortable

  • Standing: If your job requires you to stand for extended time periods – which often leads to back pain, dizziness, and blood pooling in your legs – try and put one foot up on a footrest and alternate as time goes by. Frequently take breaks if possible to offer your feet a rest. Ensure that your shoes are comfortable and offer support.
  • Sitting: A good lower back support, adjustable armrests, and a firm seat with back cushions will make long hours of sitting much easier.

- Keeping Stress under Control

  • Relax and have fun. Try to relax whenever you can and try to have fun at work to get rid of any work related stress.
  • Talk it out. Get rid of any frustrations with a supportive partner, friend, or co-worker.
  • Make a list. To do lists are great to help you prioritize your tasks.
