It is no easy task to get your baby to sleep peacefully through the night. Even though babies usually wake up every three hours because they are hungry, sleep disorders can also play a big role in your baby’s sleeplessness during nighttime.
Different Sleep Disorders in Babies
In contrast to what many people might think, sleepwalking is considered a serious sleep disorder. Sleepwalking consists of the baby crawling or walking around his crib. You as parents should calm baby and get him to lie down again.
Babies often experience night terrors, which are basically nightmares. When your baby experiences this sleep disorder, you should comfort baby and get him to lie down again. You can soothe him using a white noise machine or a night-light.
If baby bangs his head against the crib, he is exhibiting symptoms of a sleep disorder known as head banging. While this may be disturbing for you as parents, it is one way in which baby usually comforts himself. He will grow out of it in time.
While babies 4 months and younger may be awake every 3 hours to be fed or changed, he should sleep through the night after reaching the age of 4 months. Parents should keep in mind that all babies differ, and while one baby may sleep for 8 hours straight, another will have completed his night in just 4 hours. The length of baby’s sleep can thus also be seen as a sleep disorder.
Sleep talking is a sleep disorder experienced by babies and adults alike. If baby is crying through the night, try to calm baby and put him back to bed. It is important to remember that the baby is still asleep and not fully wake then.
