Features of Christening Gifts

Have a look at our Baby Furniture!

Traditionally, christening gifts are not required from friends or family, even if they are attending the christening ceremony. However, close family members such as the grandparents and godparents may give christening gifts if they choose to do so. Apart from receiving christening gifts for the baby, many parents choose to give the godparents a token of appreciation, usually some or other keepsake involving the baby. Some parents choose to either make a monetary donation to the clergy performing the ceremony or give a small gift to the priest/minister.

Time Frame concerning Christening Gifts

Most christening gifts are given on the day of the christening, since a lot of families host a small reception after the christening service. However, those who wish to give a christening gift that will be used for the christening ceremony, such as a bib, outfit, gown, booties, or bonnet, should let the parents know ahead of time about their christening gifts; this way the scenario of buying duplicate christening gifts is avoided. Those unable to attend the christening should send a christening gift shortly afterwards.

Different Types of Christening Gifts

Some common christening gifts include keepsakes like framed certificates, photo albums, picture frames, pillows, blankets, and figurines. Other people might give commemorative or personalized christening gifts, such as bracelets or silver cups with the baby’s name and christening date. Godparents and family members usually give a christening gift with religious significance; a stuffed animal lamb, a decorative cross, or children’s bible is popular. Family heirlooms, like quilts, are just as popular.

Size of Christening Gifts

Christening gifts can range from a heartfelt poem or card to small tokens of congratulations or appreciation. Godparents, grandparents, and other close family members may want to present the baby with a more substantial christening gift, such as a keepsake, gift certificate, a baby store for practical items, or a savings bond or contribution to a bank account for future educational costs.

Considerations regarding Christening Gifts

When considering whether to give a christening gift, friends and family members should understand that they are not obligated to give a christening gift of any kind, other than their congratulations and well wishes. Due to the fact that many people have already given a gift of some kind at the baby shower or at the child’s birth, all but the godparents and closest family members may find it unnecessary to give another. Those who wish to give a christening gift should consider whether they want to give a personalized or traditional christening gift, or a more practical christening gift which the parents would find useful.
